Stolzenfels Castle rises majestically from the left bank of the Rhine opposite the mouth of the Lahn River, at the point where the spa town borders of Trier, Mainz and Cologne merge. Visible from afar thanks to its ochre coloured paintwork and battlements, Stolzenfels Castle today is a perfect example of Rhine Romanticism.
One of the high points of the castle tour is the large 'Rittersaal' (knight's hall), which was designed by Schinkel based on the 'Rempter' (a type of refectory found in the castles of the Teutonic Knights) of Marienburg near Danzig.
Likewise worth seeing are the chapel murals which are also considered the best preserved mural cycles of the Düsseldorf School of Painters.
